It is now possible to leverage your Internet bandwidth to perform secure backups, LIVE, to the Amazon Web Services Simple Storage Service (S3) storage cloud.
Amazon uses a scalable, decentralized, fault tolerant server structure to guarantee 99.9% data availability at a cost far less expensive than building a data center and renting space. The only concern for the user is the reliability and speed of their own Internet connection.
Amazon Web Services offers fast, secure and inexpensive on-line storage using a simple but functional programming interface. BackupEDGE 2.3 and later incorporates this interface to create archives just as it would with any other medium.
BackupEDGE 3.0 includes quotas. Using quotas you can prevent BackupEDGE from ever exceeding a particular amount of S3 storage.
BackupEDGE provides the same "Transparent Media Technology" access to Amazon S3 that it would to an FTP Server or removable disk, including:
- Full or partial backups of servers or parts of servers with dual data integrity checking (bit-level + full file checksum).
- Instant File Restore™, providing access to individual files and folders in seconds. Only the archive blocks containing the actual data you want to restore need to be transmitted across the network link.
- Full compatibility with RecoverEDGE bare metal disaster recovery.
- No caching of entire backups on the local hard drive. Only a small (10MB) segment of your backup gets cached at any one time.
A secure, encrypted transport link is always used for S3 backups, and no one can access your S3 backups without your unique keys. Microlite also recommends that all S3 users purchase the BackupEDGE encryption option to ensure that all data that leaves your premisies is encrypted while at rest, thus conforming to customer data privacy regulations.
